Cedric (aka Fletch) 1991 - 2008
Cedric was the oldest dog, and amazingly passed away at about 17 years of age. He was the alpha male, but the alpha spot was taken over by Lily. Cedric was adopted in 1992. During a visit with my aunt and uncle, we heard about this dog living under the porch of one of their friends. The friends had been feeding him for weeks, but could not take him in because they already had 2 small dogs. They were going to call animal control the next Monday. They had been trying to find Cedric's owners for weeks, with no results. We went over to their house and Cedric did the smartest thing he could have done. He came out from under the porch and jumped on my lap, flees and all. That's all she wrote. He has had an interesting life. He has lived in Charlotte, NC, in the Netherlands, and finally ended up in East Tennessee. He had a great personality, and in his prime, he would watch animal shows on TV. He could also howl "I love my mamma". He was Springer Spaniel/Australian Sheepdog mix and had one half blue eye. The nickname Fletch came from Fletcher, NC where we adopted him. My uncle gave him the nickname.
Lily (aka Buffalo Butt)
Lily was rescued from the pound in Charlotte, NC in 1995. She is about 143 years old. She is very faithful to me and I'm referred to as her mamma. Lily was one of the lucky ones. Even though we were not told directly, we figured out that she was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. What a shame that would have been. Lily protects the house from intruders, and when we get a delivery, she attempts to go through the door. Not to worry though, when you are properly introduced, she will love you to death. Lily loves the winter time, because of her fur coat. She likes to roll on the frozen grass, or on the rare occasion we have snow, she rolls around in the snow. Her coat is extremely soft. She follows me everywhere. My husband knows that when Lily is there, I can not be far away. She is getting a bit stiff, and has to be helped into my SUV when they come along for a ride. All three of the girls love car rides. Lilly is a German Shepherd/Chow mix. The nickname Buffalo Butt as you may have guessed is based on her chow built. She's a sturdy dog.
Ruby (aka Buffalo Butt 2)
Ruby was adopted in Hendersonville, NC from All Creatures Great and Small in 2003. She had been there for 1
½ years. She came there with her daughter, and when we adopted her, they pleaded with us to take both, but this was dog #3!! We like to go camping, and taking 4 dogs camping would be a bit much. Ruby is a very calm, loving dog. She is crazy about Jordan (see picture in left hand column). When Jordan comes to our house, she is all over him. Jordan and her are buddies. She loves to be out in the backyard and patrol her property. She keeps an eye on everything from the upper deck, or from the hillside. Ruby is crazy about car rides. I have never seen a dog so fond of riding in a car. Even more surprising when you know that all she did on the trip to Tennessee after we adopted her was tremble....When I get my purse, or if she even suspects I'm leaving, she gets all excited. She'll do a little dance and will make this funny quivering sound. Ruby is about 9 years old and is a Belgian Shepherd mix. She's an absolutely gorgeous dog.
Lucy (aka Bullet Baby)
Lucy is Ruby's daughter and was also adopted from All Creatures Great and Small in Hendersonville, NC. Lucy stayed behind when we adopted Ruby. When we were back visiting my aunt and uncle in Hendersonville, we stopped by the rescue with our daughter, who promptly inquired about Ruby's daughter. She was still there 1
½ years after we had adopted Ruby. This meant she had been there for 3 years. Needless to say, the two were re-united. They still knew each other and they enjoy patrolling the fenced yard together. Both Ruby and Lucy show clear signs of abuse by their former owners. Ruby has adjusted very well in the time we've had her. Lucy has come a long way, but is still very timid. She is especially afraid of men. She loves my husband, but she still freaks out if he has something in his hand that resembles something she could be beaten with. It makes me shake my head in disgust, realizing there are people out there who would do this to an animal... cowards! Well, she's in a good home now. Lucy has a lot of greyhound in her and is extremely fast, hence the nickname "Bullet Baby". She's about 6 years old.
Dutchess (aka bobble head)
Now, isn't this an adorable face? This is Dutchess (yes with a t in Dutchess because of our Dutch heritage). She was taken in by Jordan. Dutchess is very calm, I guess you can say mellow. She loves her bed and spends a lot of time in it. She also loves car rides, and people will smile and point at the stop light when they see her. She visits with us often and she likes to be in the backyard with the other dogs. She is quite fond of Mooie, Jordan's cat, but we don't know if she has ever quite figured out what kind of creature that is. When she drinks, you'd swear someone is drowning in the water bowl. More water ends up on the floor than in the dog. It has something to do with those adorable lips. She will roll on her back for you, and the lips just flop back. Jordan also taught her a trick or two. The best one is when Jordan says "what would you rather be than a Florida Gator?", she rolls over and plays dead. No offense to Gator fans, but after all we're in East TN... Yes, we're proud grandparents. Dutchess is a Bull Mastiff and is about 3 years old
Teagan (aka Idiot) - 2003 - 2008
Teagan was one of Jordan's dogs. He was a pure bred German Shepherd. Teagan had a lot of energy, and Jordan and his wife worked very hard on training him. He was the best trained dog of the bunch and would do many different tricks. Because he had so much energy, he loved to go for walks in the park. He had a backpack he wore to the park. It made him feel he was doing a job. As with most Shepherds, Teagan needed a job. Teagan loved to go for car rides too. Jordan has a camper top on his pick-up truck, and Teagan chased the cars from there. He used to get himself in lots of trouble, because anything in the backyard was his, and he destroyed quite a few things when he got bored. After Dutchess arrived (see above), Teagan started to slow down a bit. Teagan was about 3 1/2 years old, when he managed to get out of the fenced yard and was killed by a car. A very sad day indeed.
Iris (aka Floppy Belly)
Iris is our daughter Ashley's cat. When our daughter still lived at home, Iris was part of the clan. Iris actually was boss over all of the dogs. The three girl dogs weare afraid of her, but Cedric liked to tease her sometimes. Iris was adopted from a no-kill shelter in Alcoa, TN after our other cat, Punky had died. Iris is not a real people person, but does ask for attention sometimes. She does get weird at times and will fly through the house making the strangest noises. We're not sure what gets into her, but it's like a herd of elephants running though the house. She's a good size cat and we're not sure if she was really fat at one time, or had a litter, but when she sits, there is enough skin under her belly to cover her back feet. It's like a built in foot warmer, hence the nickname Floppy Belly.
Mooie
Mooie is Jordan's cat who was adopted from the Knoxville animal shelter. Mooie means beautiful in Dutch. Mooie is a gentle, petite cat who gets along well with Dutchess. She is a bit clumsy, and has been known to fall of the couch while sleeping. She is very sweet and loves to cuddle up to people.
